Put down your lettuce wraps—it's healthy to indulge those carb cravings. Here Are 7 Science-Backed Reasons You Should Eat More Bread.

9 Reasons You Need Popcorn in Your Diet

Eating popcorn is one of the healthiest snack habits. It helps fight cancer, fills you with fiber, and has more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables.

It has few calories—if you pop it the right way

When we talk about the benefits of eating popcorn, we’re talking about air-popped popcorn, not the fatty, butter-drenched stuff you get at the movies (which, by the way, used to be banned!) The Center for Science in the Public Interest found that the medium and large popcorn sizes at Regal theaters each had 1,200 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat. A large popcorn at AMC wasn’t much better: 1,030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat.

The healthiest type of popcorn is air-popped, which only has 30 calories. You can use a hot air popper, like this Hamilton Beach Hot Air Popcorn Popper or Colonel Popper Microwave Popcorn Popper Bowl, or try this amazing DIY popcorn. All you need is a paper bag.

Yep, you read that right. According to a 2019 analysis in the journal Antioxidants, popcorn is loaded with polyphenols, compounds found in plants that act as antioxidants and reduce inflammation. Polyphenols are heavily diluted in fruits and vegetables, which are 90 percent water. Yet popcorn is made up of about 4 percent water, so the polyphenols are more highly concentrated, especially in the hulls (the hard shells that get stuck in your teeth). One serving of popcorn can contain up to 300 mg of polyphenols, according to a prior study from the University of Scranton, which would account for 13 percent of the average American’s daily intake. Fruits account for 255 mg of polyphenols per day, and vegetables bring in about 218 mg per day. That said, popcorn doesn’t have many other vitamins and nutrients, so it can’t completely replace fruits and veggies in your diet.

One of the many powers of polyphenols, like those found in popcorn, is their ability to block enzymes that cancers need to grow and, in doing so, regulate the spread of cancerous cells, notes the American Institute for Cancer Research. The traditional way to reap these health benefits is by eating fruits and vegetables, but the high concentration of polyphenols makes eating popcorn a healthy alternative. (We like Smartfood Delight Sea Salted Popcorn.) Since they can also prevent inflammation and plaque buildup, foods rich in polyphenols may help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Five Reasons to Study Public Health

In times of stress, times of sadness, times of celebration, happiness, boredom, Friday night, any night – many of us turn to chocolate to put a smile on our faces. And now it's been proven by science, with a new study revealing that eating dark chocolate can lower your risk of depression four-fold.

That's right, chocolate is healthy (within reason; the darker the better). Research from University College London, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services Canada found that of the 13,000 people they surveyed, only 1.5 per cent of chocolate eaters reported depressive symptoms, compared to the 7.6 per cent of non-chocolate eaters.

Furthermore, it was found that individuals who reported eating any dark chocolate in two 24-hour periods had 70 per cent lower odds of reporting clinically relevant depressive symptoms in the previous two weeks than those who reported not eating chocolate at all.

And this isn't the only benefit of chocolate. Research is continuing all the time, with experts already reporting back that chocolate is good for the heart, circulation and brain, and it has been suggested that it may be beneficial in such major heath challenges as autism, obesity and  diabetes (yes, diabetes – who would have thought?).

VIENNA – The head of the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog, Yukiya Amano, will step down in March for health reasons, diplomatic sources said Wednesday, as the agency navigates verification of the increasingly fragile Iran nuclear deal.

“An official statement about his departure is expected next week,” said a diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Amano has been director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2009 and his latest mandate had been due to run until 2021.

But the 72-year-old Japanese national is seeking to step down for health reasons, another diplomat said, also on condition of anonymity.

The IAEA declined comment Wednesday other than to say Amano was in contact with members of the agency’s board of governors “regarding his future plans.”

“He will make a formal communication to the board at an appropriate time,” the Vienna-based agency’s press office said.

Last week, Amano missed a special meeting of the board called at the request of the U.S. after it was confirmed that Iran had broken two limits in the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Last September, Amano missed a board of governors meeting and the agency’s general conference after undergoing a medical procedure outside of Austria.

The agency has 171 member states, but it will be up to the 35 members of its board of governors to nominate a new head.

The IAEA promotes peaceful uses of atomic energy — in scientific research for example — while also overseeing efforts to detect and prevent possible nuclear weapons proliferation.

President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the JCPOA last year and reimposed economic sanctions on Iran.

The other parties to the accord — notably China, France, Germany, Russia and the U.K. — are still trying to save it.

Since the beginning of this month, Iran has started to increase its stockpile of enriched uranium and the level of enrichment beyond limits set in the JCPOA.

But it has said it will reverse the measures if the other parties to the accord do more to mitigate the impact of U.S. sanctions.

Topline: Oracle CEO Mark Hurd is taking a leave of absence from the company due to a health issue, Oracle said Wednesday.

  • Larry Ellison, Oracle’s founder and chief technology officer, and the company’s other co-CEO, Safra Catz, will take over Hurd’s responsibilities.
  • It’s unclear how long the medical leave of absence, which was granted by Oracle’s board of directors, will last.
  • Oracle shares were down more than 2% in after-hours trading.
  • The business software giant employs 180,000 people.

Oracle could not be reached for further comment.

Crucial Quote: “Mark was extremely engaged with the business through the end of our just completed Q1, but now Mark needs to focus on his health,” Catz said.

Key Background: Hurd previously served as Hewlett Packard’s CEO for five years before resigning in 2010 after a sexual harassment investigation. A month later, he was appointed Oracle’s co-president.

Oracle’s stock has climbed to a record high of $60.50/share in 2019 as the company is making big bets on the cloud.
