Block format is typically used for business letters. In block format, the entire text is left aligned and single spaced. The exception to the single spacing is a double.

Cover letter spacing and margins are important. You have to give the hiring team every reason to read your cover letter.

Cover Letter Spacing Rules


Here are the rules of proper cover letter spacing:


  1. Single space your cover letter.
  2. Write your address first.
  3. Skip a line. Add the date.
  4. Skip again. Add their address.
  5. Skip. Add “Dear [HIRING MANAGER],”
  6. Skip. Write first paragraph.
  7. Skip. Second paragraph.
  8. Skip. Third paragraph.
  9. Skip. Add, “Sincerely,”
  10. Skip three lines.
  11. Add your name & title.


Those cover letter spacing guidelines are based on tips from the Professional Association of Resume Writers & Career Coaches (PARWCC).


Rule of thumb:


Should a cover letter be double-spaced? No. But—


They skip a line between each section.


Then they skip three lines after “Sincerely,” (That leaves room for a signature.)


Cover Letter Line Spacing


Line spacing for a cover letter should be 1.5. Shorter line spacing is hard to read. Taller spacing looks simplistic. Some experts say to adjust line spacing to fit the page. That’s wrong. If you follow the 3-paragraph letter format, 1.5 is perfect.


Cover Letter Margins


Cover letter margins are 1”. That’s the universal business letter margin standard. Some experts say to tighten margins on a cover letter to fit your text on one page. That’s wrong. If your cover letter doesn’t fit one page with 1” margins, it’s too long.

That cover letter spacing is just right. Single-spaced, with an extra line between each section. (And three lines after “Best regards.”)

It’s short and value-packed. There’s no difference between email cover letter spacing and snail mail. Just move your address to the end.


Pro Tip: You don’t need to leave three lines after “Best regards” in an email cover letter. Two is plenty. Adding your digital signature is optional (and a bit showy).

I'm writing a letter to someone, using ConTeXt. I'm running into some formatting issues. The following is the code I have, and the PDF output. There are two things that I'd like to fix.

I've highlighted the two problems with the letter in the above picture. First, ConTeXt decided to write my from-address twice. Once at the very top of the letter (which is what I want), and again in very fine print just below it. I don't quite understand why it does this by default, but as you can see, the fine print annoyingly overlaps with the to-address. I'd like to just get rid of it.

Second, there is a lot of vertical space between the to-address and the date. My letter is just over a page long, and I'd like to shrink that vertical space so I have more room for the letter body.

I've been trying to find reference material about the letter module on Google. I've come across some tutorials with examples, but I haven't seen any comprehensive guide that tells me what to do to fix those specific problems. So, along with my letter formatting questions, I'm also wondering what are some good resources that I can use to learn more about letters in ConTeXt.

Proper Spacing for a Cover Letter

When writing this document, you should always ensure that the line spacing for cover letter is correctly done. This refers to the demarcation between one line and the next. It also refers to other spaces such as the margin and indentation. This spacing needs to be correctly performed whether you are writing a typed or a written letter. It also needs to be accurately done even in a cover letter that is sent by email. Here are some guidelines on proper spacing for a cover letter.

There should be a space between your address and the date. The heading and salutation should also be separated by a space. Between your paragraphs, there should be some spaces as well. This should be a single-line space in each case. The final paragraph and your closing statement should also be separated by a space.
