When a pet dies, it can hurt just as much as when a person dies. The reason for this is that people can form strong relationships with their pets, and the feelings of loss for that relationships create a need to grieve. The loss of a pet is just like the loss of a family member or friend.
Use these examples of pet sympathy messages to show your condolences when someone loses a pet. Make the message as personal as you can and mention some positives about the pet in addition to one of the following.

7 Quotes That'll Help You Cope With Losing Your Pet

condolences for dogs

Dr. Sugar has always had a passion for two things: caring for animals and caring for the people who love them. From this passion, Pawsitive Resources was founded.

It began over a decade ago after the loss of her beloved dog.  Trying to cope with her own grief, she began searching for a book to help her explain death to her very young daughter. She wanted a children’s story that she and her daughter could share together along with a resource to provide some helpful age specific advice about how to explain death to children. She never found the book she needed, so she wrote a little story for her daughter in memory of their cherished dog and began her research and continuing education on bereavement in children.

With the support, encouragement and dedication of her close friend and fellow veterinarian, Dr. Teresa Woolard, this book was published in the hopes of helping other families. The goal was to make it easily and readily accessible for veterinarians to provide for their clients with children after the loss of a pet. Through the years, with all the wonderful, positive feedback and support from veterinarians, technicians, support staff and clients, Pawsitive Resources expanded to include a number of sympathy resources available to veterinary clinics across Canada.

Pawsitive Resources provides quality, thoughtful products to assist veterinarians in providing every client with care and support during the loss of a companion animal. Pawsitive Resources is a Canadian company and is environmentally conscious in our production and shipment of products.  Our print products are FSC certified to ensure sustainable forests for all living creatures.

What to Say to Someone Whose Pet has Died

condolences for dogs

Often during pet loss support groups, clients mention how deeply they appreciated receiving a condolence card from their veterinary clinic after the loss of their pet. This thoughtful act validates that you care about the special bond your client shared with their beloved pet. Sending a sympathy card brings comfort and builds client loyalty.

Sympathy cards can be purchased in catalogs and online, they can be custom created, or sent on your behalf when a donation to a favorite charity is made in the name of the deceased.

When sending a sympathy card it is often difficult to know what to say or how to phrase your thoughts and feelings.

A few tips:

  • It is best to use the pet's name, instead of referring to the pet as "your dog" or "your cat".
  • If you have a specific fond memory or trait that sticks out in your memory, mention it in the card. I have been told that receiving cards with personal notes helped them in their healing journey. It warms their heart to know that your staff holds their pet's memory in their hearts.
  • If you have photos of the pet, include those as well.

Some caring phrases to write in a sympathy card include:

  • May the memories of your precious (name) soften the sadness in your heart.
  • We are so sorry for the loss of your sweet boy/girl, (name). He was a beautiful (species) and clearly a much-loved member of your family; we know he will be missed.
  • Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. Wishing you comfort for the loss of (name).
  • With deepest sympathy on the loss of your beloved friend, (name).
  • We are deeply saddened by your loss of (name). We hope your fond memories of (name’s) life will help you through your time of grief.
  • As you grieve know that we are remembering you and honoring the memory of (name). Sent with love and remembrance, our hearts go out to you in your time of sorrow.
  • (Name) will remain in our hearts forever. We send you thoughts of sympathy and comfort.
  • Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel about  (name’s) death. We are here to support you in your grieving process. With sincere sympathy, (your names).
