Who We Are

Founded in 1967 as Comtech Laboratories, Comtech Systems, Inc. has spent over 50 years designing and implementing cutting-edge solutions to the toughest communications challenges worldwide. In addition to the US military, our customers include foreign governments and militaries across the globe. Additionally, we provide remote communication solutions to the commercial sector, including some of the world’s largest energy companies, such as Royal Dutch Shell, Petronas, and PEMEX.

Troposcatter Overview

Advanced Troposcatter Systems provide high capacity, low-latency data links for over-the-horizon distances, without the need to rely on satellites or multiple line-of-sight repeaters. They also provide a level of reliability and availability that matches or exceeds other communication formats, such as line of sight microwave and satellite communications. These systems have little in common with the troposcatter (tropo) equipment developed for long-haul communications from the 1950s to the 1980s, much like computers today bear little resemblance to the computers of that era. The common element is that all troposcatter systems function by using the non-homogenous elements present in the lowest level of the atmosphere— such as water vapor, dust, and atmospheric variations— to scatter a small portion of the transmitted energy forward in a predictable manner.

A troposcatter system is a point-to-point link that requires a terminal on each end, with each terminal both transmitting and receiving. Terminals can range in size from a portable transit case system, to a vehicle-mounted system or large fixed installation. The antenna(s) at each terminal are aimed at a fixed point in the troposphere, generally slightly above the horizon. The region where the antenna beams intersect is known as the “Common Volume.”. The Common Volume is where this predictable scattering phenomena occurs.

Due to the nature of troposcatter propagation, only a tiny portion of the energy is scattered forward in a usable manner. The vast majority of energy passes on into space and is lost, and a small amount of non-useable scatter energy is lost as it disperses in other directions. A troposcatter system uses the remaining energy to create a stable and secure data link.  For a full overview of  Troposcatter technology, click here.

Comtech’s Modular Transportable Transmission System [MTTS] is the most flexible mobile troposcatter terminal available. The main elements of the MTTS are the Modem Converter Case, which contains the CS67500 Digital Troposcatter Modem and the CS4400 Frequency Converter System, and the RF Case, which houses the TRP500-4450 Solid State Power Amplifier. When paired with a C-Band troposcatter antenna, the system provides a complete troposcatter communications solution in a rapidly deployable package.

The modular design allows users to take a building block approach to deployment, only utilizing the cases needed for a specific mission objective, with the ability to increase the power of the systems as those requirements change. The MC Case (paired with a C-Band antenna) can function as a stand-alone line of sight transmission system for short range and unobstructed links. The addition of a single RF case enables dual diversity troposcatter and diffraction links, for medium range and obstructed communications, and a second RF Case (with antenna) provides Quad Diversity troposcatter communications for maximum range.

The portable transit case design allows for more flexible deployment options than traditional trailer or vehicle based troposcatter systems. The MTTS cases can be carried to the top of a building or over terrain that is inaccessible by vehicles in order to optimize transmission paths, as well as be transported inside a helicopter or SUV if required.

  • Data Rates up to 50 Mbps
  • Line of Sight to 150km+ range (terrain dependent)
  • Modular transit case design for maximum flexibility
  • Can utilize any C-Band antenna with a troposcatter feed
  • Optional Tri-mode configuration enables LOS, Tropo, and VSAT communications with one common set of equipment

Core System Elements [1 x MC Case / 1 x RF Case]

  • CS67500 Digital Troposcatter Modem
  • CS4400 Frequency Converter System
  • TRP500-4450 Solid State Power Amplifier
  • QUICK Troposcatter Path Analysis Program

Support of Legacy Comtech Modems, including the TM-20

Having received questions relative to the availability and support of the Comtech Digital High capacity troposcatter modem family including the TM-20 modem, Comtech is supplying the following clarification.

Comtech Systems is the world leader in troposcatter systems and has been for the past 50 years, delivering more high capacity systems (8 Mbps and greater) than any other company in the history of troposcatter. A key Comtech Systems differentiator is that we also lead in the research and development of new troposcatter technology and techniques.

As a systems solution provider with a large installed base and whose core business is troposcatter, Comtech Systems has and continues to invest in future troposcatter technology development and in our product support services. This assures our customers that they will always have state-of-the-art equipment and that Comtech Systems will support our systems for the life of their applications.

Comtech Systems currently offers and supports only the S-575, and CS6700 series modems. This includes the S-575 (8Mb/s), the advanced CS67200 and CS67500, and the US Military CS 6716 family of 22 MB/s modems which are the most advanced modems in the market today. The US military has purchased over 350 of the Comtech 6700 series modems to date and has effectively standardized on the CS6700 modem family.

The TM-20 modem* was taken out of production in 2009, after extensive evaluations by Comtech and evaluation by the US Military. The superior performance of the Comtech designed modems already in use, and the very limited sales and market acceptance of the TM-20 made the decision to cease production clear.

We understand that the Comtech TM-20 modem is still being offered in some markets as a current supportable modem. As a service to our current and potential troposcatter customers, Comtech wishes to clearly state its position on the TM-20.

  1. The TM-20 is carried as an “obsolete” product and has been out of production since 2009. Comtech will not go back into production of this modem.
  2. There is no Comtech support for warranty or repair service or spare parts for this modem.
  3. The only support for this modem may come from inventories of these old modems manufactured between 2005 -2009 that may still be available from others. Some components used in the TM-20 are no longer available.

Comtech values its name and reputation and wants to make sure that customers understand Comtech’s position on its modem family.

*Comtech acquired all ownership rights to the TM-20 when it purchased Radyne Corporation (a satellite equipment manufacturer).

Sample Letter #1

I am very pleased to write this letter of recommendation for John Doe. I have worked with many teachers and teacher interns over my thirty-year teaching career, and he stands out among them. John was a sixth grade substitute Social Studies teacher during February and March of 2018, and I had the pleasure of working with him on our team. I found him easy to work with and a personable individual.

I was impressed that John took full responsibility as a permanent teacher, not as a temporary substitute. He put in time and effort above what was expected of a substitute, staying until 8:00 pm, if necessary. He participated in all conferences and meetings held during his interim.

It is never easy to replace a teacher. This sixth grade team can be a difficult group with many needs. John made the transition easy by developing a good rapport with both students and parents. Students respected John Doe, and responded to his caring manner and firm control of the class.

John is a very personable man. Attractive and professional-looking, he has good interpersonal skills and is easily understood by students and parents alike. He carries out every responsibility well and in a timely manner.

In closing, I would like to say that when John Doe leaves Imaginary Middle School, its loss will be another school's gain. I believe he would be a tremendous asset to any school. He is a colleague with whom I am proud to teach.

You may reach me vial E-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 555.5555. I will be happy to provide additional information or answer any questions, if needed.

Employment Review Committee:

I am pleased to recommend Jane Doe as a candidate for the position of office manager. Ms. Doe has been a capable manager in our Springfield office since 2018.

During her tenure there, Jane almost single-handedly doubled the revenue of her division. In 2019, she implemented a restructuring of the sales force, markedly increasing sales and reducing travel expenses. Her interpersonal skills and emphasis on efficiency has made Springfield our most productive branch. I regret that she has decided to leave us.

Ms. Doe has expressed her desire to move on to a position that affords her greater flexibility and growth potential. I enthusiastically recommend her for this position. If you have any questions I can answer about Ms. Doe's exceptional record with our company, please do not hesitate to contact me.

It is my pleasure to recommend John Doe as a new employee in your company. I have worked closely with him for more than five years as his supervisor and have found him extremely competent and enjoyable to work with. He is bright, innovative, and dependable. Among his many accomplishments, he suggested and developed a procedure that resulted in an annual savings of over $100,000. I am sorry to see him leave, although I wish him well in his future employment. Valuable employees are sometimes difficult to find.

Sample Letter #4

It is with pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for John Doe who, under my leadership, has served as supervisor of production for the past three years.

From the beginning, John has steadily moved upward in the company. He began as a programmer in our maintenance department, then soon graduated to a senior position in research and development, and now holds a supervisory position.

Throughout his employment with us, he has consistently displayed a remarkable ability to cope not only in high stress situations, but to actually thrive in them. Last year, when notified of a shortened deadline on an important project, he managed his team with confidence and efficiency, despite the time constraints. We were all surprised and grateful when he produced the completed project ahead of schedule.

I am sorry that John will soon leave us, but I know that this move is important to him for personal reasons. I give you my highest recommendation with confidence that John Doe will use his experience and abilities to serve you well.

Letter of Recommendation for Jane Doe (confidential)

TO: Office of Graduate Admissions, Institute of Design

FROM: John Doe, Industrial Designer

I'm honored to recommend Jane Doe for admission to graduate studies at the Institute of Design. Since Jane will be visiting you soon, the following information should help introduce her as well as convey my wholehearted recommendation that she be admitted to your program.

I've worked with Jane closely for three years, during which time we have collaborated on many projects. Her role has been that of a consultant to our architectural firm. Jane and I have also conversed privately on theoretical and practical matters of style, aesthetics, and philosophies of design. I've always been impressed by her know-how. She uses good design principles in all her projects--from arboretums to documents.

The hallmark of Jane's character is her honesty. This extends from those areas where it is easily seen in relationships and business transactions, as well as in integrity of thought. She approaches any analytical task with an exacting eye that is scientific, thorough, and meticulous. This is the kind of care and concern I mean by integrity of thought.

As a student of the humanities, Jane pursued a course of study that could serve as a model for any general education curriculum. She has not only studied Shakespeare, but mathematics as well.

Jane is one of the most pleasant persons you'll ever meet or work with. She is forthright, but neither intimidates nor intrudes. She is genuinely friendly as well as honest. You will also be impressed with her authentic and professional manner.

Jane Doe has my unqualified professional endorsement and my deep personal respect. Please feel free to call at any time if I can be of further assistance.

Describe the job:

John Doe and I have had the pleasure of working together since December, 2017, when he was hired by our company to fill the role of Director of Operations. We were in strong need of a hands-on, process-oriented individual to oversee our day-to-day operations. John turned out to be just the man we needed.

Write a statement of results:

John implemented training, measurement, and efficiency procedures that significantly strengthened our overall production results. He works hard and demands significant performance from his subordinates, and will spend the time necessary to ensure that they are properly trained.

List best characteristic:

The characteristic that is most commendable in John is his desire to improve, not simply his projects or subordinates, but himself as well. We have a very different culture at Doe Corporation. As he realized the changes required to work effectively here, he went to work analyzing himself, seeking feedback and then making changes to his style, approach, and manner. I believe he was able to make significant improvements because of his commitment to do so. This and other valuable characteristics, combined with future potential, should be valuable to any organization interested in developing their staff members.

List other good qualities:

Lastly, John is a great motivator and mentor. The employees in our organization were always inspired and prepared to meet new challenges because of his motivational style of management. John is a natural born leader. He is confident and decisive. He makes everyone around him better and would be an excellent addition to any company.

Sample Letter #7

(Here list general description of abilities)

I would give John Doe the highest recommendation for any management or director position. John is a true people builder who has worked hard to develop his skills as a Director of Training, while working for me when I served as the Executive Vice President of Operations here. His motivation and mentoring skills are some of the best I have seen in my experience in the industry. He would surely do wonders for your organization. Here are some of the accomplishments he has achieved at Doe Corporation:

(Here give more details of the person's accomplishments with your company)

* Directed all training for the operation, which included 22 call centers throughout the U.S.

* Helped prepare for the ISO Audit and Certifications.

* Performed branch manager, supervisor, and training certifications and compiled operations manuals.

* Correlated the training and implementation of new client startups.

John is absolutely one of the most dynamic and successful individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with. If you give him the opportunity, I am confident he can offer valuable improvements in your company's procedures.

(Closing statement)

Please accept this recommendation and contact me if you need additional information.

Letter of recommendation for mentor examples

writing a letter of recommendation for a mentor

If you have been asked to write a letter of recommendation for employment or for academic reasons, you may be struggling to know what information to include — and what to leave out. This recommendation letter template shows the format of a typical letter of recommendation, with details on what to include in each paragraph of your letter.

What to Include in a Letter of Recommendation

A recommendation letter should include information on who you are, your connection with the person you are recommending, why they are qualified, and the specific skills they have.

Whenever possible, it's helpful to provide specific anecdotes and examples that illustrate your support. For example, rather than simply stating that a candidate is a strong writer, mention that they wrote a prize-winning essay. If someone has achieved awards or special recognition for their accomplishments, mention it.

Your goal is to write a strong recommendation that will help the person you’re recommending get hired or accepted. When writing a specific letter referring a candidate for a particular job opening, the recommendation letter should include information on how the candidate's skills match the position they are applying for.

Ask for a copy of the job posting and a copy of the person's resume, so you can target your recommendation letter accordingly. Try to use keywords from the job listing in your recommendation. In addition, the letter should include your contact information for follow-up.

Letter of Recommendation Format

Below is a template with an example of the format for a letter of recommendation. A template can help you with the layout of your letter. It shows you what information to include and how to organize your letter.

While letter templates are great starting points for your own message, you should always edit a letter to fit your situation. You can also review samples of recommendation letters to help you write your own.

George McAdams
Coach / Biology Teacher
Thomas Jefferson High School
8740 Highland Avenue Hillside, Illinois 60162
(000) 123-1234

May 21, 2018

To Whom It May Concern:

It is with much enthusiasm that I am writing this personal recommendation for my student, Keeshan Williams. Keeshan has been an indispensable member of the Thomas Jefferson High School football team that I coach since his freshman year in 2015-2016.

Keeshan is truly one of our star students at Thomas Jefferson High School. Not only has he twice been recognized as MVP for our football team, but he also is an honors student, maintaining a 3.85 GPA as he completes a full schedule of AP classes in English, Biology, Chemistry, and Calculus. He is an acclaimed student leader, holding offices in student government and Beta Club, and also volunteers as a Biology tutor in our peer mentoring program.

Keeshan possesses a maturity and focus that far exceeds those of most students his age. Determined to eventually go to college and medical school (to pursue a career in sports medicine), he has worked various part-time jobs in retail to help fund his education, and understands how to provide attentive customer service, operate point-of-sale systems, and build team morale and project ownership.

I thus highly recommend Keeshan Williams, confident that he will bring the same drive and dedication to your organization that he brings to the classroom and the football field.

Please contact me at the email or phone number listed here if there is any other information I can provide.

What to Include in an Email Recommendation Message

When you’re sending your recommendation letter by email, you can eliminate the “Writer’s Address” section and include your name, address, title, email address, and telephone number in the signature section of your message:

The subject of your message should include the candidate's name:

Subject:Recommendation - Applicant Name

What Not to Include in a Letter of Recommendation

If you do not feel comfortable recommending someone — whether it's for a job or graduate school or for something else — it's best to let the person requesting the recommendation know that you cannot write it, rather than writing a negative letter. This will give them an opportunity to seek out someone who can wholeheartedly write a positive recommendation.

Keep in mind that your own reputation is in play when you write a letter of recommendation; you do not want to endorse someone in a letter who you do not think will perform well since it could cast a negative light on your own judgment.

You also do not want to lie in the letter: Don't exaggerate accomplishments. Overblown praise can diminish the impact of your recommendation. But be aware that since most recommendation letters skew very positive, any criticism will be very noticeable.

Best regards,
